Responsibilities:
- Administers and directs departmental operations, including providing expertise at community policy meetings.
- Ensures compliance of City Building Code, Unsafe Building Ordinance, and environmental court ordinances, including continual study of state codes, preparation of necessary revisions, and participation in code adoption processes.
- Performs on site inspections of new and existing structures to ascertain compliance with applicable statutes, codes and regulations, and issues stop work orders as necessary.
- Performs on-site inspections of buildings damaged by fire and other natural disasters, determines and takes corrective action to ensure elimination of danger and resolution of problems.
- Supervises and directs daily operations of department personnel, including recruiting, interviewing, hiring, making job assignments, and continually evaluating performance.
- Initiates appropriate legal action for noncompliance with building codes, including preparing and presenting records and documents at legal hearings.
- Oversees issuance of necessary permits and licenses, ensures proper collection of monies, and preparation and maintenance of financial records and documents.
- Receives and investigates citizen complaints regarding department operations, and initiates appropriate action to resolve valid complaints.
- Serves as member of and attends meetings of Safety Board, Electrical, HVAC, and Plumbing Boards, presenting data and making policy and program recommendations.
- Monitors and maintains records and reports of all projects and submits to appropriate local, state, and federal agencies.
- Prepares annual department budget request and administers budget upon approval.
- Reviews and evaluates department programs, systems and methods of operations, revising as necessary.
- Attends conferences and workshops pertinent to efficient administration of department.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
