The crews are currently building the new substructure for the new bridge. The substructure consist of footings, piers, and end bents. Steel piles are driven 40 feet into the ground to reach stiff soils. The steel piles support the weight of the new bridge. The footing are then poured over the steel piles. Cofferdams must be constructed to build the these new footings. A cofferdam is an enclosure built near or in water that allows the enclosed area to be pumped out. This creates a dry and safe work environment. The piers are then built on top of the footings. These substructure components work together to hold up the bridge beams and bridge deck (driving surface).
The project consists of five piers. The cycle of piles, footings, and pier will continue until we reach the east bank of the river.
